This calculator uses simplified assumptions and estimations for ease of use. The results should be used as a preliminary guide only. Actual performance may vary significantly based on real-world conditions and specific component characteristics.
- Calculation Assumptions
- BSFC (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption): Values sourced from Summit Racing and adjusted with logical assumptions. These values can be measured more accurately with dyno testing for your specific setup.
- Intercooler Efficiency: Assumed at 100% efficiency (multiplier of 1) for simplicity. In reality, intercooler efficiency varies with airflow, and increased mass flow creates more resistance through the intercooler fins (similar to water flow through a garden hose).
- T2 Temperature (Post-Compressor): Set to a fixed temperature value for simplicity. This parameter is calculable but requires additional time and complexity.
- Atmospheric Pressure: The displayed boost pressure values assume atmospheric pressure (approximately 1 bar) still exists and is not included in the total pressure calculation. Always account for ambient pressure when interpreting results.
- Injector Duty Cycle: Calculations assume 80% maximum duty cycle for fuel injectors to maintain reliability and prevent injector saturation.
- Turbo Matching Considerations
- Pressure Drop: An 8% pressure drop is assumed across bends, pipes, and thermal effects. Actual pressure drop depends on specific piping design, length, and material temperatures.
- T3 Temperature (Turbine Inlet): Maximum turbine temperature values are based on manufacturer specifications and logical engineering estimates.
- Turbine & Compressor Efficiency: Fixed efficiency values are used for turbine and compressor calculations. Actual efficiency varies with operating conditions and turbo age/condition.
- Back Pressure: A set value is used for exhaust back pressure calculations. Actual back pressure depends on exhaust system design, catalytic converters, and muffler restrictions.
⚠️ Important Notes
- This tool is designed for preliminary sizing and planning purposes only.
- Always consult with professional engine builders and tuners before making component selections.
- Component recommendations are based on manufacturer specifications and may require verification for your specific application.
- Environmental conditions (temperature, altitude, humidity) significantly affect actual performance.
- Proper engine tuning, fuel quality, and component quality are critical for achieving target performance levels.
